The First Bishop of the Diocese of Providence, RI

Bishop Hendricken

This is the story of the life, legacy, and re-entombment of the first Bishop of Providence, The Most Reverend Thomas Francis Hendricken (1827-1886).  Born in Kilkenny, Ireland, in 1872 Pope Pius IX appointed Father Hendricken the first Bishop of Providence, which at the time encompassed not only all of Rhode Island, but also what is now the Diocese of Fall River, Massachusetts. During his Episcopate, Bishop Hendricken created 15 parishes for the growing Roman Catholic community. It was Bishop Hendricken who conceived of and made possible the construction of the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul.
